I struggle with what to pair navy with in terms of hose and shoes, here are some good ideas from blogger Curly in the City:

In the corporate environment I stick to a sheer-er navy tight, so there is some difference between the solid opacity of the skirt and my leg. I love ones with tiny navy dots! {This reminds me I need another pair, my old ones died, darn runs!} Or a neutral light grey. Again in the corporate environment I don't have much leeway  However if you are in a more casual workplace or going out with friends  I'd suggest trying a deep burgundy/wine color
For shoes, I'd stick to a neutral color, I wear my heeled brown penny loafers. I'm not afraid to channel the nerd I am! ;) But a great charcoal, or navy pump would work fabulously as well.
For all I'd opt to have a bit of sheerness to the tight and not an opaque tight. And I'm kinda loving dotty tights right now, add some spunk but don't scream I'm a kid

FASHION CLUB UPDATE

I just realized that I need to update all of you on our recent Fashion Club meetings.

JCREW
 In November a new JCrew in our local mall hosted 13 members.  In addition 2 customers in the store were interested in the presentation and of course were invited to join us.  The meeting topic was Ageless Fashion.  The store manager had pulled some items from the current collection to show us how someone 40 plus could wear their clothing.

These skirts can be paired with a simple white shirt or a jacket or even a tee if you are feeling adventurous. Footwear can be anything from ballet flats to pumps to boots depending on what you have in your closet.  I myself am not a fan of nylons so would most likely pair the skirt with opaque tights (Spanx make amazing tights that last FOREVER). 

 *Another item that is timeless and ageless is the Schoolboy Blazer which comes in a variety of fabrics, colors and patterns. This style of jacket can be worn with jeans, over a dress or with a skirt.  Once the presentation was complete we were given not only a generous discount towards purchases that evening but plenty of time to shop and enjoy delicious refreshments. 

SEPHORA
Sephora hosted the Fashion Club in December.  It was a wonderful evening with not only knowledgeable Sephora staff on hand but representatives from HourGlass, Fresh and Cover FX makeup lines. The store arranged for members  who wanted to participate to first go to a skincare station for makeup removal (with a Clarisonic which I can personally recommend as amazing) and moisturizing.  Once that process was completed each member who was interested in makeup application was given their own makeup artist to answer individual questions and show them how to apply makeup .  Some members were looking for a better color match in foundation than they currently have, one member wanted to learn how to apply false eyelashes while another wanted to know the best way to cover discoloration on her skin (red chin and dark circles under her eyes).

I often wander into Sephora  to look around, spritz on perfume or look at lipstick colors. Yet I had never even looked at HourGlass makeup and found that I really liked it.  I also did not know that if I want to i.e. try a new mascara they have testers and brushes under the counter that have never been used (and are disposed of after you sample it).  I was so glad to know this because I often seen customers using the stores samples to put their own makeup on and that stopped me from ever using the samples unless I saw the makeup artist clean/disinfect the product and applicator specifically for me. In addition Sephora is very generous in providing samples for almost every product they sell so always feel free to ask to try something either at the store or at home.   At the conclusion of the evening each member was given a fun gift package with multiple samples of items like moisturizers, serums and cologne

CLOSET CLOGS

No I do not have actual plumbing problems in my closet, at least not the type of problems one calls a plumber for.  Closet clogs in my world refers to the amount of clothing I hold on to but hardly if ever wear....they clog my closet and affect my ability to see what I own and can/might actually wear.

Last Sunday I was so overwhelmed by closet clogs I went through each item hanger by hanger.  A lot went into my car and off to the donation box THAT day so there was no chance to carry these items back in during a weak moment.  Items that probably should have also been donated at this time but were not (for reasons such as telling myself I will fit into them soon or I  paid way too much  to just toss) went into a large plastic bin from Target.  If I then find myself pulling an item back out and not just trying it on but actually wearing it, then maybe that item will own its own hanger again.  If within a reasonable amount of time that does not happen, I will develop a fashion backbone and take the contents of the bin to a donation box.

This morning I discovered a cardigan and dress that go well together.  I have never even noticed this option because of my former closet clogs.  Now I have what feels like a totally new outfit without spending a cent.  It honestly is a very liberating action and one i urge you to try.

The holidays are almost upon us and having one or two new wardrobe pieces to wear when seeing family and friends always makes me smile.  Here are a some things that I love.  Not only can you wear them over the holidays but they will carry you through the upcoming season too:

A beautiful wool and cashmere scarf is timeless.  It can be worn over a coat to add a pop of color, around your shoulders to ward off chilly winds or to tie together several colors in an outfit.

HAPPY MARRIAGE

Ha ha ha...fooled you all again.  No, I not going to be handing out marriage advice.  Instead the marriage I am referring to is the one between comfort and style in footwear.  If you think maintaining a healthy relationship requires hard work, try finding a cute comfy pair of shoes or boots.  Now that truly requires patience, persistence and flexibility.

While walking across campus this morning I realized my feet did not hurt thanks to my new Wolky Dazzle shoes.  Are you familiar with this brand?  They are sold in speciality shoe stores in larger cities as well as on line (zappos.com and planetshoes.com to name two).  They offer removable foot beds, good arch support  and a fair amount of cushioning (I now feel about 85 years old, I wish I was instead telling you about the heel height on my new stilettos).

ACCESSORIES

While getting dressed for work this morning I tried on 3 different necklaces and several bracelets. As much as I like statement pieces of jewelry, I also want my look to have at least a small element of tastefulness.  I often reflect on the words of Coco Chanel who famously said "Before you leave the house, take one thing off".   Thus if I have a big necklace then my earrings are usually small and the only item on my wrist is a watch (a gift from my sons that I wear every single day).  If I wear a large sparkly bracelet like my current fave from JCrew http://www.jcrew.com/womens_category/jewelry/bracelets/PRDOVR~48738/48738.jsp then I tone down other accessories in my outfit that day.

I own so many scarves you would think I wear one every single day.  I do not.  It seems in spite of having approximately 20 in various sizes and colors, I often do not have just the "right" one and end up just eliminating a scarf all together when none match the vision I have in my mind. 

Once my alarm clock goes off in the morning I try to spend at least 5 minutes waking up and planning my outfit for the day.  If nothing feels right I do have several things that are my "fall back" items; clothing that is comfortable, flattering I hope and easy to accessorize.

SAVING CLOSET ORPHANS FROM THE DONATION BOX

The second meeting of the Fashion Club was held on October 5th at Talbots with 14 women in attendance.   Our topic was Closet Orphans; clothing  items that hang in your closet unworn because you are unsure of how to style them. The stylists at Talbots provided many ideas on new and different ways to wear our closet orphans using clothing that members brought from their own closets.  Everyone was amazed by Talbot stylists Cathy and Joan's creativity in putting together colors, fabrics and prints.   The presentation started off with a yellow jacket that I had picked as one of my favorite pieces from the new fall collection (jacket below).  Cathy and Joan  showed us how the jacket can be worn for a casual or dressy style.  Each look was totally different all while using the same jacket.  They proceeded to do the same with tweed pants while also explaining the different pant fits Talbots offers.  Moving onto closet orphans we saw them transform a light green/creme/grey wool jacket into a wardrobe foundation piece by pairing it with a great grey cotton sweater and grey pants.   An animal print pullover sweater was updated  by putting a crisp white blouse under it and popping the collar and cuffs. A patent leather bow belt in either black or the unexpected pink would add another dimension to the look.  A crepe accordion pleated black skirt with an attached pink gross grain belt was instantly transformed from an orphan to a "cannot wait to wear it" w/the simple addition of a white blouse (the one they recommended had pearl buttons which just added a extra special touch to the outfit) that highlighted the pink belt and pleats in the skirt. Another member brought in a brown/white/black tweed vest with fur trim that she had in her closet for at least a year and had never worn.  It was paired with a simple black sweater dress with 3/4 sleeves and became a stunning look. A member pointed out it could also go over a more casual chocolate brown cotton dress for a totally different but equally wearable look.  We learned not only how to wear our own closet orphans but also new ways to wear many other wardrobe pieces, both old and new.

DRESSING FOR MY REAL LIFE

When I shop I often pick up items and say "If I was 25 and size 6 and lived in a big city, I would totally wear this".  But I am none of those things so who the heck am I shopping for?  Definitely not my life as a middle aged woman who works in a  relaxed environment with college students in a small town in IN.  I do not need more sparkly tops or sweaters, I do not need more statement pieces of jewelry and I do not need another faux fur coat.  What I do need are some jackets that have seams in the waist area, pants that fit that are not black, jeans that fit and are flattering (not convinced such an item exists but here's hoping) and shoes that are comfortable and stylish (another item I do not believe actually exists, especially in my price range).
I believe we shop for things we feel comfortable with.  This is why I have a so many skirts and dresses but only 1 pair of black pants in my closet.  I hate the way I look in pants and find them so difficult to fit that I just avoid the whole experience.  Same story with jeans for me.  As several friends will confirm I am not afraid of shopping for shoes, just very discouraged.  Of course I love high heels and platforms and cute little adornments on my shoes  but that is not practical for walking across campus or strolling through the grocery store or an 8 hour shopping trip down Michigan Avenue in Chicago.  
I also see this trend in reverse.  Many women seem to have just "given up" and wear the same clothing whether they at home or at work.  Elastic waist acrylic pants, tennis shoes and sweatshirts are not appropriate for a professional environment. 


We need to honestly look at our closets and find clothing that fits, flatters and is appropriate for many varied roles we all find ourselves in every single day.

FASHION RULES

Are there really rules that govern what we wear and when we wear it?  Someone asked me a few weeks ago if they could wear an article of clothing that is primarily white in the fall?  This individual also wondered if they could carry a laptop bag that is a white floral fabric?  I think my rule of thumb (in no way do I think I am an expert nor would presume that my “rules” apply to anyone else) is I wear what I feel comfortable in.  For me that means something that is warm or cool enough (depending on the season) as well as flattering and applicable to the environment I will be in.  For example, I wear a white button down shirt 12 months per year.  The way I wear that shirt could vary whether it is in May (sleeves rolled up with ankle cropped pants) vs November (under a jacket with a skirt/tights and boots).  Would I wear a white cotton jacket once fall comes?  Probably not. For me, the light weight material is more comfortable in warm weather and doesn’t really coordinate well with heavier pants/skirts/dresses.   Another fashion rule I have been asked about is that we have our work clothes and our “dressy” clothes and can they be combined into one outfit and if so, how?  A very good friend of mine bought a beautiful red and white floral dress in a soft crepe fabric.  She wore it in early September to a wedding rehearsal dinner with sparkly jewelry and strappy sandals.  The next time I saw her in this dress she had on cute flats, a jean jacket over the red floral dress and chunky jewelry to give the dress a more casual look. 

I think we all need a few dressy/party/fun things in our closet.  However I also think the occasions to wear true “party wear” are becoming less and less prevalent as society as a whole dresses more casually in every environment, from work to school.  Therefore if we can find ways to dress down some items in our closet we definitely are utilizing the CPW (cost per wear) philosophy.  Besides a jean jacket or different jewelry I think the following wardrobe pieces be worn interchangeably with the majority of our clothing items to dress them up or dress them down:

1.  Shoes and boots
2.  Scarves
3.  Sweaters; both pullovers and cardigans
4.  Tights

I was in Chicago yesterday.  It was a perfect day.  Lunch with one son and a 2 hour car ride home with our other son.  It doesn't get better than that.  As I walked down Michigan Avenue and enjoyed the beautiful fall weather I decided to make this week's Fancies some of the places I love in the city.

Dining at new restaurants.  Piccolo Sogno is a favorite of our entire family. We have celebrated my last 2 birthdays in their outdoor garden with beautiful flowers, twinkling white lights and amazing food.

Best of all, time with the people I love in a city I love.

PURCHASES AND RETURNS

Anyone who knows me well, knows the subject of returns is near and dear to my heart.  I shop A LOT but do not necessarily purchase many things.  When I do make a purchase it generally sits in my closet for minimum of a week and often a month (or two and if I am being honest, three on occasion)  before the tags ever come off.  My receipts are neatly organized by store in an expandable paper file folder.  I confess that I am a frequent returner but an honest returner.  Everything I take back has never been worn or used, I have the proper receipts and always stay within the allotted time for said return.

I literally shudder at the thought of someone ripping tags off immediately after purchasing an item and am amazed at shoppers who wear new items the moment they get them.  I like to live with my new purchases for a while.  I can assess how much I truly love the new item and does it coordinate with other pieces in my closet?  Are there other things I want and or need more than this new purchase? Is it likely to go on sale soon and if so, could I then get a price adjustment and save some money (which then allows me to contemplate another purchase and yes it is a vicious cycle).

There have been a few times, very few, when I just knew the new dress or handbag or whatever was absolutely perfect and wore it within a few days.   Have I ever regretted that rash action?  Of course I have and therefore try to learn from past mistakes and misjudgments.   Honestly it is always nice to have one or two items in my closet that I can return should I be wavering and a new crush appears in my line of vision while shopping.

FASHION RESOLUTIONS

My closet is full, not stuffed but definitely full of some wonderful and even more not so wonderful pieces.  How did this happen?  Let me explain and tell me if this happens to you.  I am in a store and the moment I spot the sale and clearance section, I immediately zoom to those racks first.  The larger the discount the more attractive the clothing appears to me (in the moment).  My rationalization to myself when the jacket or skirt or whatever doesn't exactly fit or isn't the most flattering color or doesn't go with anything else I already own is that it is such a fabulous deal that I can always wear it around the house if nothing else.  Do I in fact wear the item out of the house? Of course not because when I get dressed I ask myself the following question:  

 1.  If I ran into an old boyfriend or the "mean" girl from high school and had this article of  clothing on...would I walk up to that person and say hello or would I slink out a side door?  If the answer is I would slink out then I should not wear it (which tells me I should never have purchased it to begin with).

Starting right now one of my fashion resolutions is to only buy clothing I feel fabulous in, would be willing to buy at full price and have at least 2 items in my closet it can be paired with. Oh yes....its also needs to be something I would never slink out a side door in.

FALL FASHION

I spent a lot of time in the car this weekend.  It provided the perfect opportunity to look at the September issues of Vogue, In Style and Elle to name a few.  As I have mentioned in previous posts I love looking at all of these magazines and trying to interrupt the themes, how these "looks" can be worked into my wardrobe.  It was especially fun this year because I knew I would be sharing my observations with all of you on this blog.

Brocade (especially gold brocade) will be everywhere from pants to jackets to peplum tops.  The first store I thought of for this trend was Zara:

LESSON LEARNED

I went shoe shopping last weekend.  As much as I love to shop for anything at any time I do not look forward to trying to find stylish shoes that are comfortable.  Years and years of wearing inexpensive high heels has taken its toll (just as my mother warned).  I suffer from plantar fasciitis (would like to say this is from running but it is from previously mentioned high heels) as well as a broken toe that  that I got while attempting to lift a 100 lb.golden retriever (another story, another post). I have tried many "comfort" brands i.e. Cole Haan Air, Dansko and Mephisto to name just a few.  The end result has been a lot of money wasted and I still do not have options I consider fashionable.  I refuse to spend $150.00 plus on shoes that I want to hide under pants so no one sees them.  Oh for the days of being able to walk into any store, see a cute pair of black stilettos or animal print wedges and as quickly as I could whip out my credit card and sign on the dotted line, the shoes were mine to wear and love.

LESSON LEARNED-Buy good quality shoes and skip the cheap ones no matter how cute they are.  Otherwise you too will be walking through the comfort shoe section trying to decide if the black sensible loafers or the white tennis shoes will be going home with you.

FASHION CLUB REPORT

The first official meeting of the Fashion Club was a success.  13 women attended.  The Talbot's stylist shared with us that jewel tones will be big this fall; lots of forest green, cranberry and navy.  She chose  pieces from the store's early fall collection for us to preview.  My immediate impression was "classic".  Corduroy blazers, button down blouses with elbow patches, knee length skirts that wavered between A-line and pencil style (which should be flattering for almost all of us).  Members had several questions about hose styles; is is true nude pantyhose are back in style (since Princess Kate has been spotted wearing them on occasion)?  The  group consensus was tights are still more flattering and stylish on most women (we all laughed when one woman said she never knew nude hose has gone out and are now back in again).  On the topic of tights we discussed a question about whether someone over 40 could wear colored tights?  There was no definitive answer on this...obviously we are not going to wear them the same way someone in her  teens or 20's would wear them.  I think if you pair i.e. dark eggplant (purple) tights with a dark grey skirt and complimentary shirt/jacket or sweater and tall boots, its a "fashion do".  I asked whether booties are still big this fall and was told that knee high boots will be seen much more often, paired with dresses and skirts.   The next meeting of the Fashion Club will be on October 3 at Talbots. The topic will be Closet Orphans.  These are items you loved when you made the purchase and intended to wear often.  However those lovable orphans are left unworn because either you do not have a coordinating wardrobe piece to wear with your "orphan" or maybe you are not sure they flatter you.  Group members were encouraged to bring in some of their "orphans" to our second meeting for ideas and feedback.

THE FASHION CLUB

Guess what my newest fashion adventure is??  A Fashion Club.  What is this you ask?  It is similar to a book club but with no obligation other than attending a meeting to learn about the style topic of the night.  Initially we will plan to meet bi-monthly.

I approached our local Talbots with my idea and volunteered to coordinate the meetings if they would provide the commentary.  The store manager was very enthusiastic and thought it was a unfilled niche in our area.  I suggested to the store's stylists that meeting topics could include pattern mixing, how to accessorize, dressing your body type and Fall 2012 fashion trends. I designed handouts (pink of course) for the check out counters explaining the Fashion Club, when our first meeting will  be (August 1, 2012 @ 6:30 pm) as well as sign up sheets so meeting reminders can be sent.  My hope is that the club will be not only a source of information about style and fashion but also an opportunity to meet other women who enjoy these topics and want to look their best.

MY LOVE AFFAIR

Did you think I would be revealing some juicy gossip about myself????  Hahaha...the only affair I am talking about is my love affair (some would say obsession) with fashion and style blogs. I spend (waste) hours each day looking through my favorites.  At the beginning of this love affair I would bookmark each blog I wanted to read.  However once BlogLovin.com came into my life I discovered a way to organize my favorite sites, see which blogs had new posts and divide them into categories  (decorating, specific stores, handbags) should I choose to do so.

Style blogs offer so many fun ideas.  I learn new ways to wear the clothes already in my closet.  In addition I have discovered color combinations I never would have thought of, different ways to accessorize, the list goes on and on.  It makes me happy to look at pretty things.

As I shared with you in an earlier post, I live in a small town with limited shopping options.  By following certain bloggers I find out when stores have new inventories, when sales are coming up, free shipping codes and many other ESSENTIAL and VITAL pieces of information for fashionistas everywhere.

WHAT STORES SHOULD I SHOP AT? I AM ____YEARS OLD AND SIZE____

Wonder why I left the above spaces blank after age and size?  Because neither of these answers should dictate which stores you shop in.  It seems to me that women feel like if they are over a certain age or size there could never ever be anything in a store like Forever 21 or The Limited for them. I am telling you that is not at all true.  I do not visit these stores on a regular basis nor will they ever be my "go to" shopping favorites. However that said when you live in a small town with limited shopping options  like I do, you have to explore EVERYWHERE.  That means you at least cruise through the jewelry, accessories (look for evening bags that are used a few times a year or a neon belt) and trendy items like a  fun colored sheer blouse to go over a sleeveless top/dress. This is the same principle I apply to visiting stores like Chicos that are generally considered to be for the more "mature woman" ( which is probably my age range but definitely not my mind-set).  I would never EVER go to any store and buy a holiday sweater or capris with cute little animals on them  Again, it is never a waste of time to go in and check our store's merchandise.  I  recently purchased a beautiful turquoise necklace (looks very much like a piece from Anthropologie) as well as a versatile scalloped black sheath dress from Chicos.

My favorite store in the whole world is Anthropologie.  I LOVE their jewelry, household items, clothing, etc etc.  Are there a lot of items there that fit me in both actual size and lifestyle?  NO, there are not. That doesn't mean I don't go in to Anthropologie ever chance I get. I always find things I want and will eventually buy (those who know me well know that means when it goes on 2nd or 3rd cut depending on how much I love it).  Other stores I frequent are JCrew, Target and Talbots.

Ladies, let's put the FUN back in shopping-lets not shop where we think we should. Lets shop where our hearts are, stores that make us happy.

Big Realization.......When In Doubt Take a Picture

I need to decide how I am going to share with all of you some of my ideas for clothing, accessories, etc.  This morning I took photos in the bathroom mirror to show a blouse over a sleeveless dress I was wearing.  My plan was to photograph the outfit from the neck down.  This is not an easy task let me tell you.  Well...big lesson learned here for me and perhaps for any of you who want to experiment a bit.  When I looked at my outfit in the photo it didn't look quite as stylish (said with a bit of sarcasm) as I had thought it did.  I have worn this flowy top/sleeveless dress combination a number of times during the past 2 summers.  Now I realize it accomplishes my initial goal of covering my arms but not in the most flattering manner.  Lesson for today is if I REALLY want to know how an outfit looks, take a picture for a true assessment.  This is often recommended by fashion stylists but for some reason I never saw it applying to me...well guess what???  I should have been doing this all along.  No wonder I never liked any pictures of myself.

Welcome to my blog: Fancy Nancy's Fashion Safari!  I wanted to enter the blogging world for awhile -- I just felt like there was something missing for fashionable ladies later in life and wanted to add my two cents.  So...a bit about myself.  I have twin boys who just turned 28 (I was not a young mother FYI) and that is about as far as I will go with announcing my age to the world!  I live in a small midwest town within a few hours of Chicago. I love shopping and fashion and girlfriends and my job (I work at a university with students and it's the best job in the wold) and wine and funny books and travel. While I have not been able to do much travel, my mantra is I will go anywhere with anyone anytime I am invited (or if I can shame them into bringing me along).

As always I am veering a bit off course here...I am beginning a blog because :

1.  My love for fashion
2.  The fun and frustration of finding clothes, shoes, accessories, etc, etc etc that are fun and stylish but not silly for my age.
3.  The challenge of finding the above named items while trying to stay within some type of budget and in my size.

4.  I have A LOT of spare time on my hands
